Homemade German Chocolate Cake

     Who doesn't like German Chocolate Cake? ME. Yes, this is a recipe for Homemade German Chocolate Cake but I do not like nor eat it. It's the weirdest thing, I do not like coconut at all but LOVE the smell of it. It is actually one of my favorite scents, but I do not like the way it taste. My sister in laws birthday was on March 25th and we go hang out with them almost every Friday night. I decided to do something special for her and Make her her favorite cake. She is after all my favorite sister in law!

 Because this was my first time ever making German Chocolate Cake, I needed to look up a recipe so I went to a trusted bakers website http://www.bettycrocker.com/ This was a very easy and great recipe however next time I make it I will reduce the Evaporated milk down to 3/4 cup and up the coconut to 2 cups. I will write this recipe like this because that's how this Southern Lady would like to make it and my sister in law said it was great so it can't be a bad change. As you can see in the picture there was quite a lot of the frosting left which when it was all poured on top {not thinking it was too much} it puddled around the bottom.

What you will need: {Ingredients}

Ingredients for the Cake:

  • 4 oz. Sweet Baking Chocolate
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 1 cup Butter {Softened}
  • 4 medium Eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla

Ingredients for the Frosting

  •  1 cup Sugar
  • 3/4 Evaporated Milk
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 3 medium Eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla
  • 2 cups Flaked Coconut
  • 1 Cup Pecans or Walnuts
Make the Cake

-Preheat Oven to 350 Fahrenheit.
-Melt Chocolate. You can melt in the microwave or in a double broiler if you have one. To melt in the microwave, place in a microwave safe bowl, place in microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring each time. Continue until fully melted.
- Beat Sugar and butter with mixer until well blended. Add Eggs, mix well. Add Chocolate and mix well again.
- Grease your pans and flour the bottom of pan, Pour Batter Evenly into your cake pans. I used two small round cake pans.
-Bake for 35 min, check with a toothpick, Cake is one when you can pull the toothpick out cleanly. If not done Bake to 45 min. { It took me 45 min, but the recipe originally said 35- it could have been my oven}
- Remove from pan and allow to cool completely

Make the Frosting

-Mix the Sugar, Butter, evaporated milk, and eggs on the top of the stove with medium heat, stir until mixed well. {Be careful you can burn the Sugar if you do not stir constantly}Once it has come to a boil, remove, and add Pecans or Walnuts and Coconut.

- Cut the round cakes in the middle to make 4 layers.
- Place one layer of cake on cake plate, add Frosting to coat. Repeat until all layers of the cake are used. Once you place the last layer on, use the remaining frosting to coat the cake.

EASY COOKING: - If you don't want to make the cake homemade or do not have the time, you can make buy German Chocolate Cake Mix and just make the homemade frosting!

Let me know how you like it, like I said I do not like German Chocolate Cake, but my sister in law loved it so it was a success!
